2016 Census will go online for the first time in history

NEXT year's Census will make Australian history as being the first where residents will be able to complete their forms online.

It was announced Sunday that next year's Census would be held on Tuesday, August 9.

Australian statistician David Kalisch said online login codes would be posted to most households, replacing hand-delivered forms from Census staff.

He expected more than 65% of households would complete the Census online.

Mr Kalisch also said paper forms would be available for those who do not have access to the internet.

"These new delivery and collection procedures aim to increase online participation, make the Census easier for households, and reduce costs for the taxpayer," he said.

Census data is used for electoral purposes and to help paint a picture of where funding should be spent across the country.
