21 crimes that shocked the southwest this year
DOMESTIC violence and alcohol took up up the majority of Roma police officer resources in 2019, according to the region's top cop.
Roma police officer in charge, Senior Sergeant Duane Frank said the prevalent issue of drugs, alcohol and family violence in the community had kept his team busy with callouts on a daily basis.
"A lot of the time our call to service are from domestic violence matters, and alcohol related matters," Snr Sgt Frank said.
"These are ongoing issues for this community, and other communities, where taking a combination of drugs and alcohol, or one or the other, can lead to erratic, sometimes criminal behaviour.
"When that happens, police become involved, investigations begin and this can put them before court."
The Western Star has extensively covered court and crime matters throughout 2019, compiling a list of 21 crimes from the past 12 months that shocked locals.
From drug charges to assault, family matters to vandalism, it's all been heard in Roma court.
Snr sgt Frank said their priorities continued to be an immediate response to domestic violence, and road safety, especially in the lead up to the festive period.
"It's going to be the case where people are going to consume alcohol or drugs, or both, and are going to behave inappropriately and unlawfully," he said.
"In that case, we will take appropriate action.
"if you're going to drink, do so in moderation and don't make poor decisions like getting behind the wheel or becoming involved in an altercation. Look after each other."
