VW suspends diesel sales in Australia

GERMAN car giant Volkswagen AG will suspend sales of Australian vehicles fitted with 1.6 or 2.0-litre EA189 diesel engines.

These cars may have been fitted with technology that masks the level of emissions they create.

However, VW AG and its subsidiary Audi are yet to provide details on which models are fitted with the "defeat devices".

VW AG has confirmed the technology is fitted to 11 million vehicles across the world.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will investigate if the company misled Australian buyers.

Volkswagen would face legal action and massive fines if found to have breached Australian consumer laws. - APN NEWSDESK
