FORMER Dalby State School student and current Dalby Herald journo Sophie Volker was heartbroken when she stood in front of the school grounds in the early hours of this morning and watched as years of memories burned and blackened before her.

Unable to stop thinking about the tragedy, she penned this tribute to the school this afternoon:

Dalby State School, we stand with you on this day of broken hearts.

The building where so many of us had our early starts.

We do not know who did this; we don't know why they would.

But this school is made of so much more than timber, bricks, and wood.

This school is built with spirit and it's clear for all to see,

In the smile of each child as they learn their 'A, B, C'.

It's in the songs they sing for us, and the first notes that they play

In that beloved music room we treasured every day.

It's in their chirpy voices as they share their 'shows and tells',

And in their sneaky giggles waiting for that 'big lunch' bell.

There's spirit in each teacher when they come to work at 8.

With homework they've prepared, which they're hoping won't be late.

It's in their homely staffroom where their Tupperware loses lids,

And the teachers work out how to give the best help for their kids.

So they may have burned our building, but they've fired up our pride.

And this spirit can't be shattered when we're standing side-by-side.

So despite the ash and crumbled beams, Dalby State School will push forward.

Ever teaching, ever learning, ever spirited. Ever Onward.
