Abbott adds fuel to anti-Islamic fire with column

MUSLIM federal politician Ed Husic has called on politicians to "keep the community together" following an attack on the nation's Islamic community by former prime minister Tony Abbott.

Mr Abbott wrote in a News Ltd column that cultures were "not equal" and "we should be ready to proclaim the clear superiority of our culture to one that justifies killing in the name of God".

His comments sparked wide criticism from other politicians, with Mr Husic, a Labor MP with a Bosnian background, labelling them an effort to "Trumpify" Australian politics.

He told Sky News all politicians should be bringing people together rather than "building up straw men in an effort to create a headline".

"I actually beg conservative politicians to think carefully about what they are saying, because what they are saying to the public is that if you are of Islamic faith, you are being hard-coded against Western values," he said.

Mr Abbott's column followed a call by US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for all Muslims to be denied entry to the US.

The Australian debate has flared in recent weeks with conservative politicians attacking the Grand Mufti, Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohammed, over his comments on the Paris terrorist attacks.

The Grand Mufti condemned the attacks, but was criticised for urging the community to consider "all causative factors" including "Islamophobia" and "military intervention".
