Accused drug trafficker released from jail

AN ALLEGED drug syndicate member who supplied drugs across south-east Queensland, including the Sunshine Coast, has been released on bail.

Van Danh Tran has been charged with drug offences, including trafficking and possessing drugs, under VLAD laws.

Mr Tran applied for bail in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Friday and Justice David Jackson approved it with strict conditions.

Justice Jackson said the charges were serious and that he faced the maximum penalties because he has been charged as being an associate of a criminal syndicate.

The court heard the quality of evidence against Mr Tran, including an analysis of seized drugs, was not yet known.

Justice Jackson said the fact that Mr Tran was born in Vietnam did not make him a risk of fleeing the country. He said Mr Tran had ties with his family in Australia.

Justice Jackson also said except for one charge a few years ago, Mr Tran had a clean record.

He said conditions could be placed on Mr Tran to ensure he would not be a risk if released on bail and approved his bail application.
