Man fined for throwing dog over fence during altercation

ANOTHER animal cruelty case has been heard in the Gatton Magistrates Court following on from a surge of cases since the beginning of the year.

Jason David Cooke pleaded guilty to one charge of wilfully and unlawfully wounding an animal.

The court heard Cooke wounded the animal on January 9 at a property in Plainland.

Cooke hurt the animal when he threw the dog over a fence.

The incident occurred over an altercation between two men.

Magistrate Graham Lee fined Cooke $1000 and convictions were recorded.

RSPCA Qld spokesman Michael Beatty said the organisation was reeling after a string of animal cruelty incidents since the start of 2016.

He said he could not remember so many animal cruelty cases in such a short period over the past 10 years he's been with the society.

"It's been a shocker . . . Deliberate cruelty cases are normally spread out, but this year we've had six in under a month," he said.

The first to come to light was the horrific premeditated torture of a possum that was posted on Snapchat.

Two young men, Callum Gibson McKenzie, 17, from Greenslopes, and Hunter Lawrence Jonasen, 17, from Tarragindi, have been charged with serious animal cruelty.

Last week someone deliberately mowed down 17 kangaroos at Wacol. 16 died at the scene but one had to be euthanized because of its injuries.

A kangaroo was also shot with an arrow and later died near Andrews Road in Greenbank while in Gympie two children smashed the nests of a family of welcome swallows and threw the fledglings into puddles of water and trampled them.

A young possum that was on his mother's back was also shot with an arrow in Cooran just outside of Gympie.

RSPCA Qld is asking anyone who has information on the Wacol kangaroo deaths, the Greenbank kangaroo and the possum to come forward.
