Arnold Schwarzenegger: 'eat less meat to save the planet'

THE Terminator and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says people need to eat less meat in order to save the environment.

The body-builder and movie star has spoken about the global greenhouse gas emissions caused by animal agriculture after making an address at Paris's leading political science institute, Sciences Po.

A report by the United Nations found that 18% of all greenhouse gases produced globally are caused by animal agriculture. But an estimate by respected US thinktank, the Worldwatch Institute, puts the figure as high as 51%.

The UN report also sited animal agriculture as the leading cause of resource consumption (water) and environmental degradation on the planet (ocean dead zones, deforestation).

Mr Schwarzenegger says he knows many body-builders and weight lifters that are vegetarians.

"You can get your protein many different ways," Mr Schwarzenegger told BBC News.

However he says asking people to go totally vegetarian would be too demanding.

"I think that's a good idea but people won't buy in.

"people will buy in to stop eating meat one or two days a week - you have to start slowly. It's a very big challenge but it doesn't mean it shouldn't be done."
