Axe murder trial: Son and accused killer taken to scene

FORMER Sunshine Coast schoolboy Henri van Breda - on trial for the murder of his mother, father and brother - has been taken to the South African home where his family were killed.

Van Breda, 22, is accused of using an axe to murder his parents Martin and Teresa, and brother Rudi, at their home in Cape Town.

The family lived on Queensland's Sunshine Coast between 2012 and 2014, and owned a property firm at Mooloolaba, before returning to South Africa.

At the inspection of the scene, van Breda's defence lawyer scaled a fence to show how easily it was to enter the property.

Media were not able to follow the group through the home during the inspection but were told van Breda was shown the bedrooms, where the bodies were found, and where the axe was found.

Earlier this week, van Breda pleaded not guilty to the deaths, saying a "masked intruder" was responsible for the bloodshed.

Both Rudi - a 21-year-old student -- and their father Martin, 54, were found on a bloodied bed after being struck with an axe.

Van Breda's mother was found with a gaping head wound on a bedroom balcony.

His sister Marli, then 16, was in a coma following the attack, but may give evidence despite suffering some memory loss.

Van Breda's lawyer told the court a masked intruder was responsible for the killings, saying the man entered the fortified home and attacked the family with an axe in the early hours of that morning.

"I shouted for help, shouting to attract attention," Van Breda told the court.

"My father was struck as he lunged towards the attack. He was hit a number of times... I also recall the attacker was laughing".
