If you are making your way down the main streets of St George this Christmas, you may see an unusual sight.

A Christmas tree with a star of gold stubbies here and a John Deere decorated tree there are the result of the St George and District Chamber of Commerce wooden Christmas tree competition.

Thirty wooden pallet Christmas trees, commissioned and made by St George Men's Shed, were distributed to local businesses as part of the competition, which will be judged at the St George Christmas Carnival on December 15.

Business owners were encouraged to decorate their trees in the style of one of three themes: traditional, a reflection of your business and Australiana, before leaving them street-side for all to admire.

Chamber of Commerce vice-president Samantha O'Toole said the competition allowed local businesses to show off their creativity while boosting the festive mood in town.

"We have had some fantastic entries so far, people are having real fun with the decorations,” Ms O'Toole said.

"There are some creative ideas. The St George Hotel was the first entry we received, they had gone all out and created a star out of gold stubby bottles for the top of their tree.

"We're trying to breathe a bit more Christmas spirit into the business community with this competition, it was a quirky idea and it really caught on.

"There is a great Christmas spirit in Balonne this year, people are very optimistic about the future of the region.

"I hope next year we willbe able to have even more trees in the competition.”
