UPDATE 2.30pm: A MAN who crashed into a tree at Southside has been airlifted to hospital with head and chest injuries.

It took fire crews up to half an hour to free the 35-year-old man from the Nissan Patrol after the crash at about 1.10pm.

A rescue helicopter took the man to the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

Gympie Ambulance officer in charge Wayne Sachs said the man remained conscious and in a stable condition throughout his ordeal - remarkable given the damage to the vehicle.

A second driver, who crashed after veering to avoid banked-up traffic at the scene, was not injured.

UPDATE 1.50pm: A RESCUE helicopter is on the scene of two single-vehicle crashes on a single stretch of road at Southside, as paramedics treat a man with serious injuries.

A Nissan Patrol crashed just after 1.20pm this afternoon on Glastonbury Rd, near the Southside tip.

The crash inflicted face and chest injuries on a 35-year-old man, who was trapped in the car for up to half an hour before firefighters could release him.

The second crash occurred just as emergency crews arrived, when a driver came around the corner at the top of a hill and did not have time to stop behind the banked up traffic.

The driver veered off the road to avoid colliding with cars; the status of that driver is still unknown.

A helicopter has landed on the road and will take the man to the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

BREAKING 1.30pm: TWO crashes have involved at least two vehicles this afternoon on a Gympie region road.

First reports indicate the first smash on Glastonbury Rd just before 1.20pm soon had traffic banking up.

Another vehicle travelling down the road then crashed into the backed-up traffic.

The number of people injured is not yet known.

More to come.
