Bush masterchefs stoke the fire at camp oven classic

PERFECTING a soft and fluffy damper with a crunchy golden crust is the mark of a seasoned camp oven cook, and Charleville's best showed off their dough for the town's own damper-off.

Seven teams joined in for the annual Camp Oven Classic, held at the Fishing Club on Saturday, trying their hand at old favourites and sweet sensations in the competition.

Fledgling campfire cook Royce Schonknecht was one of the youngest cooks on the day, and the 16-year-old was on to a winner with his damper, made from a family recipe.

"What's my trick of the trade?” Mr Schonknecht said.

"Ask my sister, it's her recipe, and together we have modified it to perfect the damper, and make it how we like it.”
