Cabbie accused of groping woman, 22, in his car

A TAXI driver accused of groping a female passenger in a terrifying incident in Toowoomba has been granted bail with strict conditions.

The man, 35, who cannot be named unless committed to trial, was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault and one of deprivation of liberty after allegedly groping a woman in a car in Kearneys Spring about 6pm Wednesday.

The incident is alleged to have unfolded after a 22-year-old woman called the man she knew to be a taxi driver in Toowoomba for a lift from a home in Kearneys Spring.

The woman told police she first became concerned when the man arrived in a personal vehicle, not a marked cab, but had been convinced to get in the car by the driver.

She told police she was further concerned when the driver took "roads she thought were strange" before the driver pulled over the vehicle.

The man then allegedly sexually assaulted the woman who tried to flee the vehicle when he locked the doors, trapping her inside.

The man then drove a short distance before pulling over again when he is alleged to have assaulted the woman a second time.

She managed to flee the car and reported the incident to police.

The man spent the night in custody before appearing before Toowoomba Magistrates Court where his solicitor Chelsea Saldumbide applied for bail on his behalf.

Ms Saldumbide said her client didn't accept the allegations and would contest the charges.

He claimed he and the complainant woman were friends and that she had contacted him by text and phone calls on Wednesday night but he had been asleep, she said.

Ms Saldumbide submitted the case was her word against his word and that it contained "very unusual circumstances".

Magistrate Damian Carroll said the allegations were very serious but taking into account the defendant had no criminal history he was prepared to grant him bail.

The man was bailed with strict conditions including having no contact with the woman or her mother.

The case was adjourned to November 2.
