THE Royal Commission into youth detention in the Northern Territory begins today as human rights advocates call on the territory and Federal Government to protect kids in the government's care.

The Human Right Law Centre is calling for an end to solitary confinement for young people in the Northern Territory, a call supported by Amnesty International and the Torrest Strait Island Legal Services.

HRLC's Ruth Barson told ABC News the Northern Territory Government "should ban the use of solitary confinement in all youth detention centres in the Northern Territory".

"We have reports that young people continue to be held in solitary confinement in Don Dale," she said.

More than 95% of young people held in youth detention in NT are of Aboriginal descent.

NATSILS is asking the NT Government to better consult with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups to reduce the rate of youth detention.

Attorney-General George Brandis announced the "Royal Commission into the Child Protection and Youth Detention Systems of the Northern Territory" in late July, following a major investigation by ABC's Four Corners that exposed mistreatment of young people in detention.

The Royal Commission will focus on "failings in the child protection and youth detention systems of the Government of the Northern Territory, and whether the treatment of those in detention breached human rights.
