"Is that a green tree snake?"

Those were the words of a woman who'd hopped out of a car that pulled up just metres away from a snake that lay injured in the middle of the road.

It was on Herbert St in Gladstone's centre, between the Department of Education building and Woolworths, and she walked just metres from the eastern brown.

"It's a brown snake or something," she said, then jumped back in the car.

People had gathered on the side walk to watch and cringed helplessly as vehicles approached the snake.

At least three cars ran over it, sending it into a squirming frenzy, before Chris Foster, of Feral Trapping Solutions, arrived.

He confirmed "it's dead."

And he said he had been called to remove a few snakes on Gladstone's main street.

He said despite the urge to help the snake, it's best to steer clear.

"Don't take a chance. A bite from this guy here, a serious envenomation, can send you unconscious in half an hour."

Eastern browns are responsible for the most death from snake bites in Australia.
