Charleville to celebrate 150 years in style

CHARLEVILLE is gearing up for one of its biggest celebrations of the year as the town prepares to party in style for its Big Birthday Bash and Bilby Festival.

The historical milestone is set to take over the streets of Charleville from Friday to Sunday, September7-9, with plenty of activities to entertain the whole family.

All the action kicks off on Thursday evening with a meet and greet at the bowls club and the official opening of the Mulga Land Gallery photography exhibition.

The fun continues on Friday with a book launch and Greek-themed lunch at Hotel Corones.

Heinemann's Bakery is also celebrating 20 years of business with an eating competition from 4pm.

A float and street parade will transform the streets of Charleville into a parade from 6pm.

On Saturday evening, the Charleville Fur Ball and Big Birthday event will invite past and present locals to descend on the town for a night of fun and dancing.

Murweh Shire tourism coordinator Monique Johnson said the townspeople were looking forward to the celebrations.

"We might have missed the actual 150th year, but that doesn't mean we haven't got a lot happening.

"The ball is always a great night with extra entertainment throughout the evening and Charleville's Big Birthday and Bilby Festival Grand Parade 2018 is shaping up to be a fantastic evening,” MsJohnson said.

Ms Johnson said there were already 22 float nominations, fairy lights above the streets and multicultural food stalls confirmed.

"People need to make sure that they book ahead for any of the bookable events, including tours, the Big Birthday Bilby Ball tickets and even restaurants.

"We wouldn't want anyone to miss out,” Ms Johnson said.

"Remember to get into the new Mulga Lands Gallery on Alfred St and see the display throughout the three days and the events on Sunday for National Bilby Day.”

Sunday will have more food, markets and bilby events, plus a fun golf day to conclude the milestone celebration.
