Charleville welcomes its newest Australian citizen

NICOLE Smith has lived through gruelling climates in Botswana, desert country, but said Charleville's dust storms are a new experience.

Last week, Mrs Smith was officially sworn in as an Australian citizen at the Murweh Shire Council chambers.

The Smith family made the move from South Africa in 2014 after her husband, Greig, was offered a position as a pilot with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Western Australia.

In 2017, they relocated to the base in Charleville, which Mrs Smith said has been a life changing experience.

"We are very much enjoying it in Charleville, the people have been very kind to us,” she said.

"When you have no family and know nobody in the country it makes it tricky and to have a community that is supportive and inclusive makes a huge difference.”

Mrs Smith said she was incredibly proud to now be an Australian citizen.

"It has been really life changing to become an Australian citizen for me, to have place to call home where you feel secure and there is a future for my son Jonathan is really important,” she said.

"He is three years old and I think there is always a lot of activities for young families here, which really helps.

"Sport is a major part of the South African culture as much as it is for Australia, so we will definitely carry on that tradition.

"I can't wait for him to start playing rugby in town.”
