Mayor wants community consultation for refugee resettlement

COMMUNITY consultation is vital before rehoming Syrian refugees in the Western Downs, according to mayor Ray Brown.

Cr Brown clarified the council's position in a media statement following Wednesday's meeting.

"If at some point in the future refugees are to be resettled, Western Downs Regional Council believes that it will be vital for the state and federal governments to work with the council on a community information and consultation program," the statement read.

The Federal Government, which will decide where incoming refugees reside, has not contacted the council.

Earlier this week, Cr Brown pushed for swift action on the matter.

"The quicker we do this, the better," he said.

Councillors were not involved in the week-long investigation into the Western Downs' suitability for refugees.
