Convicted cheese factory drug cook appeals sentence

A TOOWOOMBA man who was sentenced to 10 years behind bars for drug offences is appealing his conviction and subsequent sentence in the state's highest court.

Christopher John Harper, 55, was found guilty of 22 offences last year in the Brisbane Supreme Court following a two-and-a-half week trial.

He was also declared a serious and violent offender during sentencing, which means he must serve at least 80% of his sentence before being eligible to apply for parole.

The court heard police raided his Millmerran property in November 2002 and February 2003, and they uncovered enough chemicals to potentially make 2.4 tonnes of methamphetamine.

The court heard Harper used an old cheese factory on the Drayton Connection Rd at Wellcamp to cook the drugs before transporting it to his property at Millmerran.

Harper's barrister Sam Di Carlo made an application in the Queensland Court of Appeal on Thursday to produce fresh evidence ahead of the hearing.

The evidence centres around two separate Australian Crime Commission hearings and information garnered from those hearings.

But a non-publication and protection order covering those hearings prevents APN Newsdesk revealing what the grounds Harper is using in his bid to have his conviction and sentence overturned.

It is understood the information revealed during the Australian Crime Commission hearings has played a crucial role in forming the basis of Harper's appeal.

The court reserved its decision on both the application to produce new evidence and the subsequent appeal.
