THE public has heaped praise on the NSW cop who walked away from a press conference to arrest a bloke for swearing.

Detective Inspector Winston Woodward was addressing local media outside Albury police station on Tuesday morning when a man holding a stubby stormed across the road behind him shouting "bull….".

Insp Woodward calmly excused himself from the press briefing, turned and walked towards the man, who was wearing a grey T-shirt and tracksuit pants.

When this bloke shouted
When this bloke shouted "bulls%$t" during a police officer's press conference he probably wasn't expecting this...

The man looked stunned the officer had stopped the interview to approach him.

Cameras from the conference showed the man being made to pour his beer onto the ground before Insp Woodward grabbed his sleeve, dragging him into the police station where he was given a criminal infringement notice for offensive language.

Reaction on social media to the amusing act of proactive policing was overwhelmingly positive today.
"Your Inspector seems like a top bloke," Lucas William wrote on Facebook.
"Should be more cops like that. Sick of hearing the language people think is OK to use in public," Shirley Jenkins wrote.

NSW Police said Insp Woodward did not wish to elaborate on the incident to media because "he was just doing his job".

The man was reportedly issued with a criminal infringement notice for offensive language and fined $500.
