Couple send warning on scam

A well written letter delivered to Beverley and David Whalley's Gatton home seemed harmless at first glance.

But, a quick read soon revealed the nasty truth behind the delivery.

The couple had been on the receiving end of a scam.

Thankfully, Mr Whalley and his wife were smart enough to see through the deceptive facade.

"Its very clever," Mr Whalley said.

"I got it last Friday in an envelope with an official bank insignia and it looked very authentic and its all embossed.

"It looks really well done and that's why I'm worried about it."

The letter claims to be from the Guangdong Nanyu Bank in Hong Kong and details their efforts to pass on significant funds from a deceased client.

"We just want to make the public aware that this out there and not to fall for it," Mr Whalley said.

"All they need is four or five people to do it and then get into their accounts and they are making money - its amazing."

The letter was only the second time the couple had been targeted by a scam.

"Only a week ago I had a call from an Indian person saying they were from the Australian government offering me money," Mr Whalley said.

"All I said was send me a cheque and then they hung up.

"That's (scam) the only two times that's happened to us and its been within a week."

The couple felt compelled to warn the community of the latest scam.

"You have to be careful and think before you ring up and give out your bank details," Mr Whalley said.

"How would I feel if someone has their life savings taken and I didn't speak up?

"If we can all work together maybe we can beat these guys."
