Cowboys score narrow win against Valleys

TAKE the two was the call from the crowd as Warwick Cowboys captain-coach Matt Gainey levelled the scores at 16-all before his team won 26-22 in A-grade rugby league at Father Ranger Oval on Saturday night.

The win keeps Warwick's top-five hopes alive and makes the assignment for Valleys to make the five a lot harder.

It was 16-10 to Valleys at halftime before Warwick threw to ball wide for winger Braydon Wilson to score in the corner in the 15th minute of the second half.

Gainey narrowly missed the conversion but then landed a penalty from close range to 16-all after a bit of luck when his kick in general play hit the goalposts and bounced back into the field of play for four Warwick chasers to push the Valleys player back behind the goalline to earn possession back from a drop out.

It was in the next six that Warwick received a penalty and Gained levelled.

Warwick scored its next try from a high Gainey kick which bounced perfectly for winger Wilson to weave around six men to score in the corner for a 20-16 lead.

Gainey's next clearing kick was charged down and Bryce Whale scored under the posts during the next set, Ryan Stevens converted for a 22-20 lead with six minutes to go.

With two minutes to go, Warwick took the ball 40 metres up field on the fifth tackle with some electrifying running and passing.

On the last tackle, they went the short side for Ryan McIvor to put Joe Fuimaono over for the match-winner.

The fulltime hooter went before Gainey had the chance to attempt the conversion but he added the extras for a crucial win.

Warwick won reserve-grade 44-20 with winger Don Miller scoring three tries and Brodie Quirk two.

In C-grade, Warwick won 36-14. Ron Perquin scored two tries.

Valleys started the day with a 36-24 victory in the under-18 grade. Charlie Duroux scored a try and landed four goals.

Warwick made it four from five on the day with a five tries to two victory against The Scots PGC College in women's league tag. Alicia Bussell scored two tries.

A-grade: Warwick 26 (Braydon Wilson 2, Craig Donn, Joe Fuimaono, Justin Croft tries, Matt Gainey 3 goals) d Valleys 22 (Aaron Sillitoe, Joe Henderson, James Crombie, Bryce Whale tries, Ryan Stevens 3 goals).
