Woolies customer finds 'nasty surprise' in broccoli

A RUNAWAY Bay resident found a redback spider on her broccoli purchased from Woolworths.

Dee Nott posted the photo on social media.

She posted this message on the Woolworths Facebook page:

"Hi team Woolworths. I just had a nasty surprise - a live redback spider in my broccoli purchased today at your Runaway Bay store," Nott said.

"I am lucky it did not bite me as I washed it. I plan to take in the critter (now frozen) and my receipt tomorrow. I thought I should mention it in case there is an infestation."

The company asked her to contact them.

Another man also found a redback spider in his broccoli at the company's Nambour store.

Woolworths has now withdrawn a batch of broccoli from Queensland and New South Wales Fairfax reports.

Meanwhile others have hit out at the claims.

Barbara Easthope said: To all those complaining about bugs and spiders in their food, what is the alternative, everything so doused in pesticide that nothing can survive and the food becomes laden in it.   Well done Woolies it's great to see that your broccoli and salad mix is fresh and healthy enough that these little critters can survive.
