Cyclist's family heard of Qld death via website
THE family of a Danish student killed while riding her bike in Brisbane found out about her death via a news website that showed photos of her belongings spread across the road, a court has heard.
Rebekka Meyer, 22, was hit by a truck on a notorious stretch of Annerley Road in South Brisbane last September.
A coronial inquest is examining her death and whether the Stanley Street and Annerley Road intersection needed upgrading to prevent similar accidents.
Just 13 months before Ms Meyer's death, Brisbane rider Leslie Karayan died on the same road - which has seen 34 crashes involving cyclists between 2007 and 2011.
The inquest heard emotional statements from Ms Meyer's sister Tania Liemann and her mother Mikala Liemann who said Ms Meyer had a "bright and happy mind" and was "very much loved".
Her parents first learnt about their daughter's death via a news website.
"I could recognise her things, spread all over the intersection," her mother said.
"I saw a body covered with a white blanket and rescue workers washing the street."
