JASON Day's chances of winning his second US PGA Championship look to have disappeared after a nightmare on the 18th at Quail Hollow.

The Australian took a quadruple bogey eight to end the third round and was seven shots off the pace going into the final round overnight.

The Queenslander had endured an up-and-down round but was still in touch with leader Kevin Kisner heading to the last.

His tee shot, however, landed behind a tree and that's where Day's troubles began.

Inexplicably, instead of chipping out sideways on to the fairway, he went for what seemed an impossible shot and saw his ball end up in an unplayable lie.

After taking a penalty shot, he played into the rough before chipping on to the green. His putt lipped out to leave him with an eight, ending his round on 77 on even par, seven shots off the lead.

American Kisner is on -7under, one shot clear of countryman Chris Stroud and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama.

Louis Oosthuizen and Justin Thomas are a shot further back in joint fourth.
