Deadly Choices offers pathway to Australian Defence Force
INSTILLING discipline, respect and self esteem in young people is the main objective in the Deadly Recruits camp, a stepping stone for those interested in joining the Australian Defence Force.
Cunnamulla P-12 State School, Deadly Recruits has been selected as one of the 36 regional winners of Queensland's 2019 Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools.
Cunnamulla State School principal Karen Campbell said the camp was about engaging students in situations which could be confronting, but could promote determination and self belief in the process.
"It really is a community effort putting it together providing young people with every opportunity to be successful,” she said.
"It's a great opportunity for those who want to pursue a career in the Defence Force.
"Over the years, five young people have been selected from it.”
Partnering with Charleville and St George State High, the week-long camp has been running for the past six years for students in year 9-12 and involves military style exercises, mentoring and fitness challenges.
State award winners will be announced at the Showcase Awards Gala Dinner in Brisbane on October 25, fittingly on Queensland's celebration of World Teachers' Day.
