Deledio injury not a major problem

AFL: Greater Western Sydney expects Brett Deledio to be available for round one after the former Tiger suffered a calf injury.

Deledio, 29, only played 11 games for Richmond in 2016, after battling through calf issues.

And it appears the same issue has returned, with the 243-game veteran set to miss the Giant's opening pre-season matches.

GWS football boss Wayne Campbell said Deledio had suffered a grade one strain.

"It's a grade one which generally a couple of weeks, but given he's had some history ... we'll be really conservative with him," Campbell said on SEN.

"We'd prefer it didn't happen but it's not the end of the world.

"He's here for three years, he's here for the long-term, we need him when the whips are cracking so at this stage we'll take it conservatively."

Campbell said the injury would rule out most players for two weeks but Deledio would be sidelined for three to five, putting him on track for one JLT Community Series match.

"We'd like to think he'll play two weeks before round one, all things being well."

GWS head of athletic performance David Joyce indicated the club wouldn't be rushing Deledio's return.

"We'll be taking a conservative approach to managing Brett's calf to maximise his availability during the season," Joyce told the GWS website.

"He's a competitor and we couldn't be happier with how Brett has performed since arriving at the club in November.

"Brett will maintain his strength program but will have his running loads reduced in the short term as we look to build up his training again over the next three weeks.

"We expect him to play a role in the later stages of the JLT Community Series."

Deledio joined the Giants on a three-year deal at the end of 2016, after year-long speculation that he would be leaving the Tigers.

Richmond received a first and third round selection at this year's draft in exchange for the dual All-Australian.
