DETAILS: When will southwest Qld get COVID vaccine

Queenslanders have been rejoicing over the rollout of the new COVID-19 vaccines, but there have been concerns some parts of regional and remote parts of the state could fall behind.

The first people to receive the immunisations will be frontline health care workers, quarantine and border workers, and people working or living in aged care or disability facilities.

According to a Queensland Government website, every hospital and health service in the state will provide vaccines for the aforementioned Phase 1a.

But it will begin with the Pfizer vaccine for the following ‘hubs’ of Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Townsville, and Cairns.

There is currently no details on when or how the vaccine will be rolled out specifically to southwest Queensland, however.

“COVID–19 vaccinations initially are being offered through six Pfizer hubs across Queensland, which are located in close proximity to our points of entry for international arrivals, or where quarantine hotels are located,” a Queensland Health spokesman said.

“As larger supplies of AstraZeneca vaccine is confirmed by the Federal Government, the vaccination program will be progressively expanded across Queensland, including the southwest region.

“Once this occurs, we will be coordinating the delivery of the vaccine to other priority groups, quickly followed by the general population.

“This expansion will see not only more hospitals come on board as vaccination hubs across the state, including the southwest region, but the utilisation of pharmacies, GPs and community health centres to deliver the vaccine to more Queenslanders, as safely and as quickly as possible.”

The Australian Government will be responsible for delivering the vaccine to approved providers such as GPs and pharmacies across Queensland.

The State Government will administer it to selected state-run clinics such as public hospitals.
