Eddie Obeid guilty of misconduct in public office

FORMER NSW Labor powerbroker Eddie Obeid could face time in jail after being found guilty of misconduct in public office.

A NSW Supreme Court on Tuesday took less than a day to find Obeid guilty on today, after a trial which lasted three weeks.

Crown prosecutor Peter Neil told the Sydney Morning Herald he would be pushing for Obeid, 72, to be jailed.

The jury found Obeid had wilfully failed to declare a personal stake in Circular Quay cafe leases when lobbying an official about the leases.

The court heard Obeid had urged NSW Maritime Authority deputy chief Steve Dunn to intervene regarding a number of leases Obeid claimed were being mistreated.

The court heard Obeid claimed to be acting "on behalf of constituents" but an Obeid family trust had a 90% interest in the leases.

The cafes made regular cash payments of about $1000 to members of the Obeid family.

The court heard Obeid "duped" Mr Dunn into believing he was acting in the public interest.

There is no maximum sentence for criminal misconduct in public office in NSW. Obeid's bail was extended. He will be sentenced at a later date. - ARM
