Ennis to pull the pin at season’s end

AFTER 50 years of waiting and coming so close, Cronulla doesn’t need any motivation to win this year’s NRL premiership.

But it has got one with hooker Michael Ennis surprisingly announcing he will retire at the end of the 2016 season.

The much-travelled Ennis has been instrumental in Cronulla stringing together a club-record 15-straight wins and being taken seriously as a contender for the club’s maiden premiership in October.

An emotional Ennis broke the shock news to teammates at a lunch in Sydney today.

“It’s time to be a dad, it’s time to go and spend some time with my family,” Ennis told a media conference yesterday.

“I love the game, I think I’ll always love the game. I love my relationships with my teammates and the people that run the football clubs.

“But it’s time to be honest and be open and that was today.

“While I still think I’ve got a really good 10 or 12 weeks ahead of me, I can tip all my energy into that. But that’s it.”

Ennis, 32, who hails from Coffs Harbour, started his rugby league journey with Newcastle in 2003 with stopovers at St George, Brisbane and the Bulldogs.

He will be hoping to go out with a fairytale premiership win after more than 250 games.
