SES inundated with 000 calls over Facebook outage

FACEBOOK is continuing to work to resolve outages on its platforms including Facebook, Messenger and Instagram as global users have been left unable to use the services for hours.

According to downdector.com, which monitors network outages across the globe, the outages started around 3am AEST in parts of the United States, parts of Europe, Asia and Australia.

As of 1.30pm AEST most parts of Australia have had their service restored but there are still some areas without access.

Early this morning Facebook said it was working to understand the problem but nearly eight hours later the company has not still found a fix.

The social media giant said it was not a DDoS attack, a type of attack that hackers use to interrupt service to a site by flooding it with traffic.

Both Facebook's desktop site and app appeared to be affected.

Emergency services in Australia are asking the public to stop calling triple zero about Facebook and Instagram being down.

Queensland police reportedly issued a warning to the public while the SES in South Australia took to twitter to also remind people not call emergency services.

Channel 7 presenter Natalie Barr relayed the message from Queensland police on Sunrise this morning, delivered with a look of a mother who can't believe she actually has to tell her kids not to stuff spaghetti down their pants at the dinner table.
