Former Palmer owned refinery fined over spills
Clive Palmer's former company Queensland Nickel has been fined $50,000 for overflows of contaminated water from its tailings dam near Townsville in April 2014.
The Yabulu nickel refinery dam, containing high levels of cobalt, ammonia and sulphur, overflowed for four to five consecutive days during heavy rain.
Crown prosecutor Jeff Hunter QC, representing the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, told the Townsville District Court that tens of millions of litres went over the spillway each day.
Mr Hunter said this posed a serious environmental risk considering the dam's close proximity to Halifax Bay and the Great Barrier Reef.
