Funding boost to build southwest tourism

SOUTHWEST Queensland councils are joining forces to boost regional tourism and reap the rewards of the growing traveller numbers discovering the hidden gems in the outback.

South West Regional Economic Development Association chair and Murweh Shire mayor Annie Liston said the $150,000 project, funded by the Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Remote Area Boards, was the second stage of the councils working together to grow visitor numbers and bring tourist dollars to the southwest.

"We may be having a drought but we are starting to see a flood of visitors hitting the highways to sample life in the southwest,” she said.

"It is vital that our member councils take the lead and grow the self-drive tourism market to benefit all of our communities and businesses.”

Cr Liston said the focus would be on a long-term strategic and operational plan.

"We need to identify any gaps we have in our region's tourism offerings, provide training to those who are the face of our region and map out what infrastructure, products and services will help us grow into the future,” she said.

"This project will provide SWRED members with a plan to guide tourist growth in the region for the next five years.”

SWRED has six member councils (Balonne, Bulloo, Maranoa, Murweh, Paroo and Quilpie) which lobby for the betterment of the southwest region and its communities.
