THE 'Year of Firsts' have graduated school - Year 12 students from Roma State College were officially the secondary school of Year 12, first to undergo the ATAR program and then first to go through a year of schooling amidst a global pandemic.

Students, staff and parents gathered last Thursday in the Jubilee Hall for the Year 12 Graduation and Awards night.

Principal Guy Hendriks said the past year has been one like no other, but he's grateful to share and celebrate this ceremony.

"These students have missed social sports and artistic opportunities, but I have not heard one word of 'why was it me'," Mr Hendriks said.

"There were an exceptional group of students.

"The feedback I receive from everyone in this graduating class is always positive.

"They're a credit to themselves and their parents."

Head of Senior Campus Mrs Kate Van Der Meulen was gobsmacked that it had been 10 years since she met most of the Year 12 students.

"These little faces and personalities have grown into wonderful young adults," Mrs Van Der Meulen said.

"This group of firsts were the first cohert for the ATAR program, officially secondary schooling year of Year 7.

"And when I said that in February, I didn't think for one moment we would be faced with so many changes and challenges, now they're the first Year 12 cohert to get through a year of schooling amidst a global pandemic.

"However, I don't want the students to remember it as the 'COVID year', I want them to remember all the great times they had and the memories they have made."

Mrs Van Der Meulen said the graduating class have been wonderful role models to younger students and have stepped up at every opportunity to assist staff in a variety of situations.

"I sincerely wish you all the best in your future endeavours," she said.

"I look forward to hearing stories of your successes and the many adventures that I know lie ahead.

"There will be bumps along the way but remember to rise above those challenges and know you can come out the other side even stronger.

"You are truly a special bunch and I will miss seeing you around the campus.

"So take care of yourselves and each other."
