Garden hose rescue hero receives bravery award

FOR 15 minutes Peter Krogh helped a co-worker trapped in floodwater stay alive.

On Wednesday he received a Commendation for Brave Conduct and a Group Bravery Citation at Queensland Government House in Brisbane.

When Mr Krogh's co-worker Ben Cook walked about 3m into floodwater to see whether a car could drive through, the water's force swept him off his feet.

He was dragged to the mouth of a pipe with water up to his chest and rising.

Mr Krogh grabbed Mr Cook but couldn't drag him out. For 15 minutes he held Mr Cook until another ute arrived.

Then the group tied a rope around Mr Cook and gave him a piece of hose to breathe through as the water rose above his head.

The group eventually devised a plan for Mr Cook to go through the pipe and be grabbed at the other end.

One man swam out with a rope tied around him and grabbed Mr Cook when he emerged from the pipe and the others pulled them back to safety.

Mr Krogh could not make the ceremony because of work commitments so his daughter Meghan accepted the award in his place.

"He thought that if anyone was in that position, anyone would go for it," she said.

"We have medals of our relatives who were in World War One and he loves them and is proud of them. And I think now he has his own medals he'll be proud of them. Because I'm very proud of him."

Meghan said her father and Mr Cook remain good friends.
