Gas project approved

SENEX is one step closer to progressing it's Western Surat Gas Project after receiving its federal environmental approval.

The project itself comprises about 840 sq km of natural gas acreage in the Surat Basin area, to be developed over multiple phases.

According to a Senex spokeswoman the initial phase is set to be developed through a "16 terajoule per day gas processing facility tied in to the GLNG infrastructure”.

"Gas will be sold to GLNG under a 20-year agreement with first sales gas volumes targeted for 2019,” the spokeswoman said.

The federal environmental approval means that, along with the previously granted state environmental approvals and petroleum lease, the company now has all the primary approvals required to start development.

"Approval by the state and Commonwealth signifies that Senex has demonstrated that any potentially adverse environmental impacts from the development of the project will be appropriately avoided, managed or mitigated,” the spokeswoman said.

"It has taken several years to run through the full assessment process.

"Senex started the process in 2015 directly after obtaining the blocks. And following thorough baseline an impact assessments, including public consultation phases, concluded the process in August this year.

"As part of the approvals process, Senex submitted significant baseline data, and engaged with community and key stakeholders.

"Interested and potentially affected parties were invited to comment, with Senex receiving only a small number of comments, many of them positive.”

The company is yet to make a 'final investment decision' on the project, which the spokeswoman explained as a formal sanction of the development.

"Following the decision we'll start drilling development wells and in time will commence selling 'sales specification' gas to GLNG,” she said.
