Sub-zero temps forecast in Toowoomba cold blast

UPDATE: Toowoomba residents are being warned to get their coats and robes ready, as a cold blast looks set to drop the temperatures below zero in the region.

Brisbane Weather, a weather forecasting site, is predicting the thermometer to drop as low as -4 on the Darling Downs around May 21.

As part of the freezing temperatures, Toowoomba could drop to as low as -2 with very strong cold south westerly winds.

Maximums in the Garden City could reach 12-16 degrees, while on western parts of the Darling Downs the maximums will be 8-12 degrees.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting temperatures to start dropping from this week with Thursday and Friday's minimum temperatures falling to a chilly eight degrees.

Saturday and Sunday have predicted minimum temperatures of just 10 degrees in Toowoomba.

Forecaster Matt Marshall said while the night temperatures were dropping off, they were about to fall in line with the May averages.

"We had a really warm April with above average temperatures pushed into the start of May as well, and it's only going to see things start to cool down from here," he said.

Mr Marshall said BOM could not confirm Brisbane Weather's prediction of sub-zero temperatures until closer to the expected weather event.

While Toowoomba sinks to eight degrees on Thursday and Friday, Stanthorpe is predicted to dip lower to 3-4 degrees.

"What we'll start to see is sunny days but also very cold temperatures at night."
