Good energy to energise major rugby comp

Rugby Union: Mark your calendars busy for the first weekend in February 2020, the toughest teams in the Maranoa will be up against competitors from across Queensland and beyond in the Roma Echidna’s Rugby 7’s competition.

Origin is proud to be the co-sponsor of the women’s championship in 2020, where teams will be competing for the Emilee Cherry Cup. Expectations are that there will be 15 women’s teams competing alongside 25 men’s teams, an increase from just five years ago when only 10 men’s teams competed for the glory of winning.

“We are proud to support local sporting organisations, and it’s fantastic to be sponsoring the inaugural Origin-AGL women’s competition in 2020. Women’s participation in rugby is growing, and it’s exciting to be part of promoting home town talent, as well as showcasing female sporting talent from outside the Maranoa,” said Dave Atkin, Origin’s General Manager for the region.

“The growth in the competition from 2019 showcases an exciting time for rugby union in the region, and Origin is delighted to be part of this, encouraging more women to participate in sport and have the opportunity to be their best, but also to support an event which will bring visitors to Roma.”

Teams as far away as the Central Highlands, Moranbah, Brisbane and Rockhampton have already registered, and with a total purse of over $20,000 on offer, there is much to celebrate. Previous years have seen players, families, friends and fans make their way to Gallas Fox Park to enjoy the event and the 2020 competition is shaping up to exceed all expectations.

“I love being part of the Echidna women’s team, it has allowed me to connect with people and meet others, stay fit and really feel like part of the community. I can’t wait for the Rugby 7’s so we can show other teams and our families how good we are. It’s going to be so much fun!” said Brittney Smith, Team Captain.

“The Echidnas are really proud to bring a high-quality sporting competition to Roma. It’s a labour of love to promote the club and bring players to our region,” said David Hickey, coordinator of the event.
