Three 'good Samaritans' have crash-tackled a convicted child-sex offender as he attempted to snatch a 4-year-old boy off his pushbike in a Illinois park.

Fox 32 reports the boy was playing with friends shortly after noon in the suburb of Woodstock north-west of Chicago yesterday.

Witnesses saw a man approach the boy and pull him off his bicycle before hefting him over his shoulder and attempting to run off.

"He was riding it up and down the street for a while but the guy came out of nowhere and we saw him sprinting I was confused and said I think he's going to go after the kid I actually said that, my parents got up and saw him," Cat Ramirez told Fox 32 and Chicago's WGN9.

"He picked the kid up and was pulling him this way, pulling his pants down."

"I was super-scared, disgusted. I was shaking ... going to cry," her sister Mikayla added.

Three men decided to act.

Cat and Mikayla's father gave chase and confronted the man as two painters who were driving by at the time responded to shouts for help.

After pursuing 39-year-old Kevin Sorensen, the men forced him to the ground.

They "physically freed the boy from the man and restrained him," police said.

"My dad asked him why he did it and he said Satan told him to," Cat said.

The three had to be physically pulled from the attacker by officers who responded to the emergency call.

Initially, the police thought they were brawling.

But the circumstances were soon cleared up.

"Because of the quick, heroic actions of the good Samaritans, responding officers and detectives, the child was not physically injured," Police Chief John Lieb said in a statement.

Sorensen was found to have been convicted of child-sex offences in 1969, though he was "no longer required to be registered as such", he added.

Sorensen has been charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated battery, along with unlawful restraint and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

He is being held in prison to await a bail hearing.
