Same-sex relationships now recognised in Queensland

SAME-sex relationships will be legally recognised after 20 opposition MPs crossed the floor to vote with the government.

The bill allows relationships, regardless of gender make-up, to be legally recognised and allow official ceremonies to be held.

The LNP allowed a free vote on the bill which the Labor government introduced and supported.

Of the 42 LNP MPs, 20 voted with the government. Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg, who voted against the bill, said he did not support ceremonies which mimic marriage - and said he supports the Federal Government's plans for a referendum on legalising same-sex marriage.

"We understand this is a deeply personal issue for many people," he said.

"They have deeply personal views… they may change from time to time."

Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey praised the LNP for allowing a free vote and called on Opposition members to vote for the bill.

"It is not the role of the state to judge people and discriminate people based on their sexual orientation, based on their gender, based on their race," he said.

Along with Mr Springborg many of the LNP MPs who voted against the bill were from regional Queensland.

These included Lockyer MP Ian Rickuss, Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan, Beaudesert MP Jon Krause, Maroochydore MP Fiona Simpson, Burnett MP Stephen Bennett, Condamine MP Pat Weir, Buderim MP Steve Dickson, Glass House MP Andrew Powell, Toowoomba North MP Trevor Watts, Warrego MP Ann Leahy, Toowoomba South MP John McVeigh, Gregory MP Lachlan Millar and Gympie MP Tony Perrett.

Callide MP Jeff Seeney and Hervey Bay MP Ted Sorensen MP were not in the chamber and did not vote.
