Heidi hacks off her long locks for Hair with Heart

FOR most people 55 centimetres might not sound like much, until you start measuring locks of hair that is.

20-year-old Heidi Davis has been growing out her hair for over five years, but she hasn't devoted all this time to make a fashion statement.

The former Chinchilla State High School student said she made the decision at 15 to save her hair up to donate to Variety's Hair With Heart Foundation who take the hair and send it to specialised wig makers who create wigs for those who have lost their hair due to a medical condition.

Miss Davis is currently studying social work at the University of Queensland in Brisbane and lives on campus at Duchesne College.

She said it was the loss of her great Aunt to terminal cancer earlier this year that pushed her to want to do something good for someone else.

"My aunt was a very kind woman who had a lot of time for those around her, I'd like to think she'd be proud of me for donating my hair to someone who needs it.”

As well as chopping off her lovely locks, Miss Davis has also managed to raise nearly $1000 for Variety, the Children's Charity who grants wigs to kids that have lost their hair due to a medical condition, for example, alopecia.

"Wigs can cost up to $6000 and only last two years at best meaning some families can spend a small fortune on them throughout a child's youth,” Miss Davis said.

"I hope my contribution and everyone's generous support and donations can help make a difference to one family struggling through a tough time.”

It isn't too late to donate either as Miss Davis plans on keeping her donation page up until the end of August.

To make a donation today, head to the Hair With Heart website and enter "Hair With a Blue Heart" in the sponsor a friend search bar to find Miss Davis' donation page.
