Here's why the Bruce Hwy is closed so long after a crash

EVEN when sympathising with a grieving family after a horror crash on the Bruce Highway, many motorists feel the frustration of being stuck in busy traffic.

Beerwah police station Senior Sergeant Kim Cavell has explained why it is so important for police to close the lanes of the highway to do their job.

Do you think something needs to be fixed on the Bruce Highway?

This poll ended on 09 April 2016.

Current Results

Yes, they should add an extra lane.

79%

No, nothing is wrong with the highway it's driver error.

19%

I don't travel on the highway so it doesn't affect me.

0%

This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

"We have to be able to render medical assistance," Sen Sgt Cavell said.

"This involves (as in the case of the horror smash on Sunday) a helicopter landing and then people administrating medical assistance."

In the case of a fatality, police have an extra job to do to maintain the integrity of the scene.

And these investigations take time.

"We try to get the traffic around the site without degrading the integrity of the scene.

"This could go before a coroner of a court. The integrity of a scene is very important to police.

"We have to be able to preserve any evidence for investigations."
