A POLICE officer has heroically rescued a family trapped inside their burning home.
The house in the Melbourne's suburb of Essendon was ablaze at 8.30pm on Sunday, when the off-duty officer and neighbour realised those inside could not unlock their front gate.
The officer ran to the back of the house and kicked down a fence so the family could flee.
A crew of 28 firefighters rushed to the suburban street to battle the flames, which took an hour to bring unde3r control.
The 46-year-old home was entirely destroyed.
