Horn gloves up for bushfire victims

They were crucial to Jeff Horn winning one of Australia's most exciting fights and now the fighter with the huge heart is using them to help a nation ravaged by bushfires.

The former world champion and trainer Glenn Rushton are auctioning off the gloves Horn wore in his pulsating revenge victory over Michael Zerafa in Brisbane last month.

"I want these gloves to help people in need,'' Horn said.

"Australia has given me great support in my career and I want to do something to help others.

"I've really been affected by people suffering from the bushfires and I think our firefighters are real heroes. We all owe them a huge debt of gratitude.''

The vivid red and white "Rival'' brand gloves were at the centre of a stunning pre-fight switch by the Horn camp who decided at the last minute to beat up Zerafa with his own equipment.

Both boxers brought two pairs of gloves to the bout on December 18 and under the rules, Horn's trainer Glenn Rushton reserved the right to use Zerafa's spare pair for Horn. He sensed that Zerafa's gloves, stamped with the boxer's name, had less padding and would deliver more shock than Horn's "Everlast'' brand gloves.

So it was that Horn battered Zerafa with a pair of gloves stamped "Zerafa''.

Rushton said the auction would be the first time that any of Horn's gloves had been sold as a set because the trainer had previously kept a glove from every one of Horn's fights as a souvenir.

"Horn-Zerafa II was not only one of the most exciting and important fights in Australian boxing history, it was a critical fight for Jeff, as a loss could have meant the end of his career,'' Rushton said.

"The bookies had Zerafa a short priced favourite but Jeff outboxed, outmuscled, and outpunched his bigger and younger opponent, sending him twice to the canvas in round nine.''

Rushton said both he and Horn had been "deeply touched by the fires''.

"We dearly hope Australia will get behind the auction as every dollar raised will help to ease the incredible burden people are facing,'' Rushton said.

The auction will be live from Monday January 13 at 11am AEST through Pickles auctions at www.fightthefires.com.au
