Hunt for teens after stolen car ends up in river

A CAR which entered the Nerang River at Chevron Island last night was unoccupied at the time, police said.

Dive squad officers from Brisbane attended the scene where the car was fully submerged in a canal off Darrambal Street and were able to determine there was no one inside.

The car was observed entering the water around 8.20pm and has since been identified as having been stolen from Surfers Paradise on April 25.

The water in that area of the canal is about seven metres deep, the Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

The vehicle has been retrieved from the water with the assistance of a tow truck.

Police are searching for a group of juveniles who were witnessed running from the scene.

Anyone who may have further information is urged to contact Policelink or Crime Stoppers.
