Judge blasts dad for turning home into drug den

A JUDGE has jailed a man for allowing his home to be turned into a drug den, despite the fact that his children and former partner were living there.

Clinton Gordon Sutcliffe, 29, pleaded guilty in Maryborough Supreme Court to a series of drug offences, possession of a gun and possession of ammunition.

The court heard that following an estrangement with his wife and mother of his children, Sutcliffe's life had spiralled out of control.

Sutcliffe's drug use had led to his home in Howard becoming a gathering place for other drug users.

When police raided the property in July last year, 31 grams of cannabis was found at the home, along with a bong and a bowl containing a further 2.9 grams of cannabis.

In addition to that, more than 16 grams of methylamphetamine was found along with a sawn-off rifle and ammunition.

The purchase of the drugs was for the collective use of those who frequented the home but Sutcliffe denied owning the gun or the ammunition.

The court heard that Sutcliffe described his home as a "drop-in place" and he had little control over the movements of the people who visited his home or what they brought into it.

Sutcliffe's partner and children lived in the top level of the home.

Justice Peter Applegarth said it was up to Sutcliffe to get clean of drugs and be a father to his four children.

He said if Sutcliffe continued to land himself behind bars, he would be a stranger to his daughters.

Sutcliffe was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended after four months, as well as 120 hours of community service and probation upon his release.
