Kurdish funeral for Gold Coast anti-IS fighter
HUNDREDS of mourners have attended the traditional Kurdish funeral of a Gold Coast man who died fighting against Islamic State in Syria.
Reece Harding, known as Heval Bagok Australi among his Kurdish comrades, was killed when he stepped on a landmine while fighting for the YPG People's Defence Units last month.
The Kurdish Association of Victoria Sunday's funeral at the request of the 23-year-old's parents, who also attended the ceremony.
Tributes have flowed on the Lions of Rojava Facebook page, which was set up to recruit overseas fighters to join the Kurdish ranks.
"Everybody in his unit praised him for his courage and said that he was hard to match," the page stated.
Mr Harding is the second Australian to die fighting together with Kurdish forces in Syria. His body will be taken to the Gold Coast for a family burial on Saturday.
