Monsoon burst increases chance of cyclone forming

ALMOST three months has passed since Mackay entered the monsoon season and while one hasn't formed so far, an expected monsoon burst could soon change that.

The Bureau of Meteorology changed its likelihood of a tropical cyclone for the Coral Sea to low for Wednesday, meaning there's a 5-20% of a system forming.

"A monsoon burst is expected to develop about northern parts of the Coral Sea early this week," the Bureau of Meteorology said on their website.

"There is a slightly elevated risk of a tropical system developing in the Coral Sea mid to late week."

The last time Mackay felt the effects of a cyclone was Marcia in February 2015 which caused more than $750million worth of damage on impacted areas.

The cyclone season is from November to April.
