Mackay will always be 'home' for MKR contestants
MACKAY will always be home for My Kitchen Rules' miner diners.
Mates Alex and Gareth feel lucky to have the support of Mackay behind them as they prepare for their debut on the hit reality cooking show.
"A small place like that really gets behind you," Alex told the Mercury.
"When we went there to film people somehow found out and were looking for the house where we were filming. It was pretty mental. The town really appreciates stuff like (MKR) coming there."
They may have made the move south to the Sunshine Coast but there was never any doubt the 25-year-olds would host their instant restaurant in their hometown.
"Mackay will always be home for both of us," Gareth said.
Will you watch this season of My Kitchen Rules?
This poll ended on 30 January 2016.
This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.
It's the first time the show, now in its seventh season, has filmed in the region.
Judge Manu Feildel said he enjoyed his time in Central Queensland.
"Everybody was quite welcoming there," Feildel said.
"It was nice to meet the real Australians."
The French chef described the miner diners as "cool guys".
"Obviously they've been friends for a long time. They work together, hang out together, cook together; they're just cool guys," he said.
"Cooking is a new passion of theirs that they've discovered together as friends and went 'hang on we're really enjoying ourselves here'."
Despite hailing from the country's sugar capital, Alex and Gareth admit desserts are their weakness in the kitchen.
"Going on the show was like being thrown in the deep end," Gareth said.
"We wanted to throw ourselves in the deep end and see if we could swim. We learned so much more in that short period of time than we could have in a more traditional approach to it all."
