A SINGLE can of beer put him over the drink drive limit.

A middle-aged man blew 0.084 after he claimed to have consumed one can of Toohey's New an hour before being pulled over.

David McAdie was stopped by police for a random breath test while he was travelling along the Brisbane Valley Highway in Fernvale about 7.40pm on July 3.

The Scotland-born 48-year-old told officers he's only alcoholic drink in the past 24 hours was the beer about 6.40pm.

He said he didn't understand why he was over the limit.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Brad Dick said McAdie had no previous criminal or traffic history.

He was fined $400 and put on a restricted licence for six months.
